On our esteemed guests, the York RI Band

It is just over a week before our winter concert with York Railway Institute Band! Mark the evening of 1st December in your diaries. We are sure it will be a night to remember!

York Railway Institute Band was established in 1883 by Noah Bruce, and is York’s oldest and most successful brass band. The band’s name has changed a number of times over its history. It was originally called Chaucer Street Mission Band, and finally took on the name of York Railway Institute Band after allying itself to York Railway Institute in 1952 – the majority of members being railwaymen at that time.
Their musical director, Dr David Lancaster, studied music at York and Cambridge universities, and subsequently worked as a composer and freelance trumpeter in the UK and Europe. Dr Lancaster lives in York and works as Director of Music at York St John University, teaching composition and managing the university’s music programmes.
More information about the band can be found on their website.
